GERMAN LIE BROKEN
ATTACK BY THE BRITISH FIRST ARMY BRILLIANT SUCCESS • ITALY AND WAR WHOLE NATION STIRRED GARIBALDI'S THREAT ZEPPELIN ATTACKED BY AEROPLANES The brightest feature in the war news to-day is the brilliant and successful attack by the British First Anny in the Western bat-tle-front, a gap orer a front of two niiles being opened up in the enemy's front, followed up by an advance of about a mile into the German lines. Taken in conjunction with definite achievements elsewhere along the Allies' 'line, —the crushing of no fewer than four German counter-attacks on Steenstraate (on the Yser Canal), and suocessful operations by the French in the Champagne district—the sum total of the news from all, sources is a big score for the Allies. There is a dearth of news from the Eastern theatre. Fighting is proceeding in the Gallipoli Peninsula, and from Mr. Martin Donohoe, the "Daily Chronicle's" special correspondent,. we are given an instance or two of Turkish tactics in -war—tactics to their discredit. The advance of the Allies is hampered by wire entanglements) and our troops are using hand grenades in close fighting. The Russian Fleet, which is battering away at the back door of Constantinople, is slowly reducing Turkey's merchant shipping to the vanishing point. There is tremendous excitement in Italy, where popular feeling in favour of intervention on the side of the Allies is running high. The Germanophil statesman Giolitti is in bad odour, and Signor Salmidra, whose Cabinet has just resigned, is a popular idol, and the King has declined to accept his resignation. War with it is reported, will commence with a declaration on May i 9. * ; — :
