GERMAN ATTACKS REACH A DESPERATE PHASE
BRITISH HOLD ON HILL 60 STRENGTHENED. (Rec. May 16, 11.50 a.m.) Paris, May 15. The German offensive lias reached a desperate phase, and they continue to hurl reckless attacks. There were several assaults on Tuesday from the southeast, in close formation, with disastrous results from our rifle-fire and machineguns. '■ ... "Hie British are strengthening their hold on Hill 60, which has been a stumbling-block to the German plans for the last three weeks. The plain before Ypres is a charnel-house of German dead. The British line was recently reinforced, and is now stronger than over. The British are astonishing, their own officers b.v their coolness and daring. 'A French officer declares that then- bearing is miraculous."
