GREAT BATTLE STILL RAGING HEAVY CASUALTIES THE FRENCH VICTORY AT CARENCY RUSSIAN STAND IN , GALICIA CAVALRY FIGHTING AMERICA AND THE 1 PIRATES The great struggle between the Allies and the Germans for the control of the Calais Road is still the absorbing feature of the war news, and offensive and counter-offensive furnish the bases of engagements of the fiercest description, involving heavy casualties to both sides, but particularly to the Germans, who are said to be hurling their massed' battalions' at the Allies' front in the most reckless fashion. The late news ,gives an interesting account} of the • French victory at Oarency, in which the French troops displayed remarkable dash and elan. The British are strengthening their hold on the famous Hill 60 and thwarting the German plans, and while the former are receiving a steady stream of reinforcements, the latter are said to be weakening. In the Eastern theatre the Russians are holding tenaciously to the line of the San, and have contracted their front for more effective' defence, while at the same time making free use of their cavalry for testing tie strength of the German line. The politioal upheaval in Italy has, reached a stage when the march of events niuet perforce pause until the question' of political leadership is settled. The latest news is that Signor Salandra is to be invited to remain in office. Anti-German riots continue in Britain, South Africa, . and Australia—and even in New Zealand—but there is evidence that the outburst has passed the dangerous stage. Botha's appeal to his countrymen, telegraphed from the oapital of the enemy's conquered territory, touches a lofty note.. Hot fighting is proceeding in the Dardanelles, and to-day's news contains interesting references to the part played by Australian and New ZeaJand field gunners in destroying a Turkish counter-attack, with fearful loss to the Turks.
