GERMAN SOUTH-WEST AFRICA PRACTICALLY CAPTURED

News from the Dardanelles to-day includes the announcement that the British battleship Goliath has been sunk in the strait by a Turk- . ish iorpedoer. Two British subpi arines have passed the minefields of ' the strait, and worked havoc on Turkish warships and transports in the Sea of Marmora. The sinking of two Turkish gunboats and a - large transport is definitely reported, but as the submarines have been . at work for a fortnight past, the Turks have probably suffered other losses as woll. • Uncertainty as to Italy's future course of action is created by the news that Signor Salandra's Cabinet has resigned. An official message from General Botha conveys the gratifying news that Windhoek, the capital of German South-West Africa) has been occupied, and that the Union Forces are practically in complete possession of 'tie whole colony. In the great battle in Northern France a wonderful aschievement is reported by the French, who penetrated the ■ enemy's linos for a distance of two and a half miles in the space of ninety minutes. They have also captured the fortified village of Carency and positional to the east. No further advance is recorded by the British north of La Bassee, and one correspondent declares that they are hampered by a lack of the high explosives essential to a successful assault on the enemy's line. The situation in Western Galicia .is still more or less uncertain, but in, Eastern Galicia the Russians have resumed the offensive, and in the Carpathi'ans they have beaten off attacks. They appear, also, to have the German raid into the Baltio provinces well in hand, though LibaUj now stated to be of slight importance, remains in the hands of the enemy.
