SAVINGS BANK FIGURES

LARGE EXCESS OF DEPOSITS. The roturns> of the Post Office Savings Bank for the four months from January 1 to April 30 of this year show tho excess of deposits over withdrawals at tho remarkable figure of £1,011,592 6s. 2d. This sum is exceptional, as only four times previously have tho deposits exceeded withdrawals by £1,000,000. This was in the years 1906, 1907, 1910, and 1914, last year having been a record. In 1906 the excess was £1,000,050 14s. lOd.; 1907,' £1,226,540 19s. 7d.; 1910, £1,013,424 os. 9d.; and last year a record was created, there having been an excess of, roughly, £70,000 more than any previous year. These figures wero for tho full year, so that at the rate deposits fre exceeding withdrawals this year there promises to be a very big record established. One reason for this largo, sum may bo that people are not investing so freely, on account of the war, preferring tho safety of the Savings Rank. Some of the returns for the past lour months uere received bv telegraph, and may be subject to slight alteration.
