OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE. (By Meeranh.-Praffl Arooolatton.) Auckland, May 13. A conference of Liberal supporters in the i Bay of Islands electorate, to bo presided over by Sir Joseph Ward, will be held on Saturday, when a candidate will be selected. Sir Joseph Ward will deliver an address in the evening. In the course of a telegram to Mr. Stewart, the Reform candidate, the Right Hon. W. F. Masso.v says: "I authorise you to make the announcement that you are the official Government candidate.''

Anthony Wilding (the famous lawn tennis champion, -who was reported killed in action yesterday) was attached to the armoured motors section, under Commander Samson. A shell killed him instantly while ho was in an observation dug-out at Laventie on Monday. TRADING WITH THE ENEMY SYDNEY GEM DEALER FINED. (Rec. May 13, 8.40 p.m.) Sydney, May 13. Ernest Becker, a gem dealor, pleaded guilty to two charges of attempting to trade with enemy firms, and was fined £50 on one charge and £100 on the other. BRITISH LIQUOR BILLS SALE OF IMMATURE SPIRITS. London, May 13. The Immature Spirits Restriction Bill prohibits the sale of spirits for consumption, unless they have' been warehoused, for three _ years, except when used in specified industrial manufactures. MUNITIONS AND MECHANICS PROPOSED CONTINGENT OF WORKERS. Sydney, May 12. Commenting on tlie proposal to send munitions and mechanics to England, Senator Millen stated that the output of the, Australian small arms factory was disappointingly below" the estimates. The men were only working one shift, with overtime.
Instead of sending men to England, moro could be advantageously employed here in the formation of a, second shift, and speeding-up the output. BRITISH CASUALTY LISTS .
