" : 0 The Masterton Miniature Rifle Club opened its season on Tuesday. Sine© the news of the gallant stand of the New Zealanders in the Dardanelles has come to hand there has been great activity in defence matters, and young wen are anxious to become efficient in the use of the rifle. A young man named George Singleton was fined £3, in default fourteen days' imprisonment, at' Masterton on Monday, for' l the theft of a bridle. A further charge of stealing a saddle was dismissed. The Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board has decided to again avail itself of the services of a ladies' committee in the administration of the district nursing rchome A rifle match between the Mauriceville and Te Wharau Rifle Clubs was won by the former by 11 points. There are at present twelve inmates of the Solway Old Men's Home, and eleven inmates of the Buchanan Home.' The tender of Mr. A. J. Parton, of Carterton, has been accepted by the Wairarapa, Hospital and Charitable Aid' Board for the installation of a hot water and heating apparatus at the Greytown Hospital. The total rateable value of the district under the supervision of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board has increased by £602,110 in twelve months. The approximate population, of the district has decreased by 2572 .during' the year 1914-15. This is due in a_ measure to the number who have enlisted for service at the front, The Masterton County Council, at its meeting on Tuesday, declinod to endorse a proposal of the Southland County Council that a tax bo imposed on motorcars, collectable by the Government. The annual report of tho Wairarapa Caledonian Society shows that there are at present 539' members good on the books. The Carterton branch of the socioty has a membership of 127. The Wairarapa Presbytery has recommended that the Rev. Thomas Halliday bo added to the list of tho Chaplains' Committee of Now Zealand.
