TOBACCONIST'S SHOP, DESTROYED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Stratford, May 12. T. Mercer's tobacoonist shop and adjoining billiard _ saloon were destroyed by fire early this morning. The buildin;; was owned by F. W. Wake, of Auckland, and the insurances are not known. Mercer's stock . and fittings were insured for £600 in. tlie Phoenix, and the saloon for £300 in the : same office. BOARDINGHOUSE DAMAGED. X gust of wind blowing the curtains of a bedroom against a lighted candle, during the absence of the occupant, caused the City B«igade to turn out at No. 6 Tennyson Street at 12.45 o'clock this morning. _ The outbreak resulted in the destruction of the stairs, landing, and two. back bedrooms of the house. The building, a seven-roomed, two-story boardinghouse, was occupied "■/V Donald Giles. There was no inSurahce on the contents. QUEEN PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL A great deal "f public interest is being manifested in the patriotic carnival to be held on the King's Birthday (June 3). -Hundreds of workers are already engaged upo'i preparations, and no doubt the public will assist in every way possible to make the effort a complete success. If all citizens lend their aid a big sum should be raised for the assistance of our incapacitated soldiors and sailors, and the dependents of those who lose tlieir 'lives " A feature of the carnival will be a great harvest sale, and for this purposo donations of all kinds will be required. There may be some who cannot afford to give much financial assistance to the cause, but every home and farm can supply some goods.suitable for sale at the carnival. Farm, and garden produce of every kind, home-made preserves and cakes, handicrafts, etc., articles of all sorts will be welcomed and will help to swell the fund. Several districts throughout the province liave'already formed local committees to forward the good work. The organiser, Professor(Cardston, will visit 'any suburb or town as soon as a committee is formed to meet him. It is intended to make the carnival thoroughly representative of the whole province, l There is no time to be lost, and those who wish to assist so noble a cause should make a move at once. The secretary of tie Patriotic Society is Mr. Jos. Lewis, Grey Street-, Wellington, and the chairman is Mr. H. G. Hill.
