NOTES AND COMMENTS
[Bt Glexcoe.] Weights for the mincrr events at Wanganui aro. due to-day, and acceptances close on Monday night. Tho three Rokcby yearlings in J. H. Prossor's stables have done very well lately, and their, trainer is highly pleased with'them. They have not-been galloped, but have done a lot of tliree-quavter-pace work and should soon be ready to stride along at their best pace. Local owners who intend being .represented at the Oamaru Meeting next week should note that acceptances close tonight. Entries for the Trial and Shorts are due at the same time. Acceptances for the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase are .due to-mor-row night. General entries also close on that date. Reports from tho 60uth state that R. J Mason will bring Emperador, Biineter, and Banksia to the Wanganui and Auckland Meetings. Th« two first-named are doing well on the tracks, but the l&stnamed is stated to be a long way off the mare she was two months ago.
Tlire was quite a run yesterday on the Feilding-traiued Lcapuki for the Wanganui Steeplechase, and at present he is almost as much favoured as Daylight Bill. Leapuki is a member of A. Attwood's Feilding team, -and was a runner' in the First Steeplechase at Trenthiam last month, hut he ran off at the first fence, a proceeding which greatly surprised his trainer, as he went very strong in his schooling work at home. Still, three miles is a long way to go for a horse that is taking part in his first steeplechase, and the fact that he is such a hard puller and an extravagant jumper will not assist the Lethe gelding. Football, who was sent over to Sydney in January last in company with Sea Pink, was a staTter in the Kogarah Stakes, six furlongs, at Moorefield this month, but with Bst. 121b. in the saddle he failed to gain a place. . The speedy -Tatterley has changed hands, and is now owned by Mr. H. E. Troutbeck. He remains, in T. F. Quinlivan's stables at Hastings, and may be raced in the sprint events at Ellersiie next month. The Hastings-trained Appin has arrived at Wanganui,''and is to take part in the Steeplechase events there next week. Tho old Possible gelding has been off the scene for a considerable time, and though he is a winner over country lie may require a race or two before he is back to his best form. Mr. J. Bull's junipers, Addnought and iwahou, have already arrived at Wanganui to complete their training for the meeting which opens next week. Simple Sam, who has, been spelled for a few weeks, is again in work at New Plymouth under P. Johnson's care. That a bit of weight does not stop a good horse over a short course and when well was shown yesterday, when Tyson carried lOst. and won the Telegraph Hack Handicap at Egmont. The Coronet gelding has been very consistent this autumn. A feature of the racing' at Hawera yesterday was the big price paid by Crown Pearl, n J bo in the ordinary course of events would have been expected to have started favourite. His owner, J. George, also won the Hack Race with Glenroy. The well-known Riccarton trainer H. Cutts recently joined the ranks of the Benedicts. . Sir George Clifford has sold Stevedore to the Otago 'sportsman, Sir. G. Mason, and tho son ,of Treadmill—Fanhaven was sent to Dunedin last week. His new owner made a very successful deal some years ago whe he purchased Flying Spark from the same quarter, the horse winning a lot of races in Australia. Sandstorm, the two-year-old by : San Francisco—Windwhistle, has been disposed of by Sir George Clifford, and his purchaser, Sir. J. M'Kendry, will take him to v Dunedin this week. The Manawatu Trotting Club met , on Monday night and decided, if the conditions under which the totalisator permit is to be granted are favourable, to hold its Trotting Meeting on Wednesday, June 9, on the 'Awapnni racecourse. The programme passed provides stakes of over JE4OO. The jumpers Scots Guard and Cheddar were shipped to Sydney from Auckland by the Riverina yesterday.
