MR. ZANTE WOOD'S RECITAL
Mr. Zante Wood, a clever amateur entertainer, whose services were in con* sidcrable demand when he resided in Wellington some three or four years ago, has once more taken up his residence here, and last evening gave an invitation recital at, the Masonio Hall. Mr. Wood, who returned from a visit to England and the Continent some months ago, has a leaning for character monologues and-comic vocal ditties with a catch, which he brightens, with a quaint humour of his own. He did nothing better last evening than "Tick Tock, an apostrophe to an ancient grandfather's clock by a youngster of 70 or thereabouts. Pie was also amusing in "Wot vur do Oi Love 'ee," in w?iich he represented a country yokel in love, "A Mock Melodrama," "The Same Old May," "His First New Trousers," "Our. Bazaar," and, at tho piano, "Two Little Songs" (a skit on the short encore song) and "The Gesticulatory Reciter." Mr. Wood was assisted by Mr. S. Laslett Exton,. who uses a light musical tenor artistically, and who sang "Sparkling Eyes" (from "The Gondoliers") and "Come Into the Garden, Maud," for both of which songs he was encored. Miss Selma Hugo, a mezzo contralto with a somewhat embarrassing vibrato, sang "Vorrei," "Still As the Night," and "Sognai." Mr. H. M. Paterson's accompaniments were in the best of good taste—always helpful, but ncvor obtrusive.
