CITY FIRE
_4 Early this morning the Fire Brigade received a call to a fire at No. 86 Vivian Street, a two-storv shop and .dwelling. The shop portion of the building was occupied by Mrs. Penlington, dtaper, .while the upper story, of five rooms was unoccupied. The workroom attached to the shop was badly damaged, and the shop and its contents sufferedfrom heat and smoke. The causeof the outbreak is not. known. The insurances were not available this morning. The following letter is-of interest as having been written in the trenches to Mrs. Walmck, the widow of a New Zealander who was killed while fighting with the British Expeditionary Force in Flanders: — "British Expeditionary Force, 16/8/1915.—Dear Mrs. Walinck, -Just before our last fight, your husband left me your address, and asked me to write you if anything happened to him. 'Doubtless the authorities have informed you by now of his death. Ho died fighting bravely in a glorious charge, and died a soldier's death. He and I were ohums, and exchanged addresses before parting. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your terrible loss. He were ooth in the same company; and if at a later date I can supply you with any further details, I shall only be too happy- to do so, providing I am still in the land of the living Trusting you will not take this too much to heart.—l remain, yours truly (signed) Corpl. H. A. Reepe." But for Corporal Reepe's action, Mrs. Walinck would probably never have known of tho circumstances of hor husband's death. Messrs. Milburn and Co., Auckland insert an advertisement in this issue concerning a 92f1-acre grazing property they have for sale.
