EDUCATION COMMISSION

4 CANTERBURY EVIDENCE. (By Telegraph.--Press Association.) Cliristchuroh, May 7. At tie Echtcation Boundaries Commission to-day, Mr. H. C. Lane, secretary of the North Canterbury Education Board, suggested that there should bo five districts 'in the South Island and four in. the North Island. South Canterbury could be more easily dealt with from Christchurch than could the West Coast. Mr. G. M. Thomson pointed out that tlie whole of the South Islam! would almost certainly bo divided into four boards. North Canterbury would almost certainly have to absorb either the South Canterbury Board or the West Coast. Mr. John J. Adams, president of tho North Canterbury Educational Institute, said that the teachers would view with satisfaction any rearrangements of the districts which would include in new districts a fair proportion of tho larger schools. At present some districts included an aggregation of small schools, and promotion in these districts was limited. Mr. J. Caughey, M.A., said that, apart from the benefit which a properlybalanced district would afford to teachers themselves, the benefit to education would be derived from a bettor command by the board of the material at its hand. A large district would enable the board to formulate a proper scheme of regular promotions for teachers. Mr. Caughey also pointed out that the T,hool committee system could he improved by the amalgamation so that, say, one committee should govern tho affaire of flv® schools.
