NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By Telegraph.—Sneciai Correspondent.)
mv TT J, * Ashburton, May 7. ine Hurdle field contained a fresli runner in Margo, who, however, gave a very poor display. Commotion was favourite in a good betting race, and after a good finish with tho first day's winner he prev&ued by a neck. Curilla was again in third place. Golden Grape made the ruiiming ior a mile, but he was jumping very badly, and was in trouble over tlie last part. Castiron ran right up to his first day's form, and Curilla will do butter later on.
A veiy hot favourite in Pride of Clutha was unfurled in the Moretou Hack Handicap, and the good thing carue off, but only aitw its* backers had got the chock on their lines, for it caught tho tapes, and at the end of a furlong was in the rear. Bony, however, rode a cool race, and after a good run in the straight he got up in time to wia by a neck from Medley, who was in front the whole way. St. Ewe % was a good third, and will be beard of very shortly. Bonation ran badly, and so did the much-raced lied Pennon. "Explanation satisfactory" was the verdict of an inquiry into 'tho form of the winner.
Bonny Kigg and Honesty, place-getters yesterday, were backed iu that order for tho Autumn Handicap. The latter and Fender set a very fast pace over tho first paTt, and in the straight Scotch Melody, who had always been handy, came along, and won a very fast-run raco by a neck. Snapdragon was close up third. After gettiii" a clear run on tho fence at the home turn, Honesty was beaten by Fender worrying her over tho first part, and Bonny Kigg covered a lot of extra ground after getting badly away. First Glance ran a good race under his weight, and finished fouxth, with Bonny Eigg and Speoialform alongside. Don Francisco was tailed off tho whole way. The time is a roefcrd for the course.
Hardshot was the onty withdrawal from tho Juvenile Handicap, leaving eleven runners. Bellshire and Down were baeked in that order. At the start, Holiday led off from Bellshire and Halina, while Ardenvohr was left rounding the bend. Bellshire led, with Down moving up in the straight. The Riccarton gelding was hard-ridden to overhaul Bellshire, and Fiery Cross, a rank outsider, also appeared on tho scene, and split tho pair. Halina, who was sharpened up by the run the first day, was clc-se up fourth, then came Marsa and I'haddeus.
Several of the . runners were heavily backed in the Winchnioro Welter, but a rank outsider in Countess Tolstoi took charge at the barrier rise, and led the whole way, winning easily ir fast time. Trireme and Sir Hamilton were in the places; Medallist was next. Several of the starters had their chances spoilt at the rise of the barrier, particularly Glenowla nd Wild Pilgrim. The Selma Trot was won by Ldthario (F. Holmes), who was on the limit, and led the whole way. Soda, the second horse, was carried wide at tho turn, and then did well to finish second. Lady Lyons was close up third. General Link, the favourite, performed badly. 0.1.C. was called off. His rider was fined for starting beforo time. In the concluding event, Medley and Dinner Gong both carried over four figures on the machine. The start was delayed a considerable timo by Dinner Gong, wlio was eventually left standing. Marvclite and Sveaborg carried on tho running to the straight entrance, where Peg and Medley joined in, and after a brilliant finish the pair mado a dead heat. Marvelite was third.
