CERCLE FRANCAIS
The inaugural meeting of tho session of tile Cercle Litteraire Francais, better known as the French Club, took place on Thursday evening. The society now .holds its meetings in Bartlett's Studio, Willis Street. The proceedings took the form of a musical evening. There was a large attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Tho first item was a paino solo given by Miss Fay Ray ward. Then followed the annual presidential address. The president, Mr A. A. Stuart Menteath, spoke in excellent French. Ho congratulated the cetcla on having secured such a pleasant room to meet in, and described it as a veritable drawingroom. He further spoke of increased numbers, applying for membership, and while regretting the loss through removals of several prominent members, he was glad to find that others had come forward to fill their places, and were working vigorously for the society. Aftor this songs were contributed by Master Whyte, Mademoiselle de Cleene, Miss Rose Van Staveren, and Messrs. Luks and Spencer. Mademoiselle do Cleene gave a beautiful reading from Victor Hugo, and recitntions were given by Misses Mead and Hind. A number of encores wero accorded to these ladies and gentlemen. Mr. John Huteheson then gave several selections of French music, songs, and opera pieces on a I'athe gramaphone, and the proceedings ended with the sinking of the "Marseillaise."
