THE CROWN THEATRE

NEW PICTURE THEATRE AT THORNDON.

The syndicate interested in 1 the erection of the Crown Theatre—which was to have been erected _ about twelve months ago—have decided to proceed with the building scheme on a modified plan. The building, which is to occupy that valuable site on the corner of Charlotte Street and Sydney Street

(right opposite the Parliamentary grounds), was originally to have been one containing two large halls. There is now to be one hall only, to seat about a thousand persons, the floor level of <vhich will be a few feet above that of Sydney Street, where the main entrance will be located. Three steps will bring one to the entrance foyer, and from

there half a dozen steps will raise one to the level of the main floor, which will rake gently down to the orchestral well and stage, which will be handily planned for concerts and small entertainments. There will be a gallery (in contour) across the northern end of the theatre, which will command a full view of the stage from every point. The Crown Theatre will be finished off internally with • a decorative plaster, will be electrically lit, and as all staircases and floors are to be of reinforced concrete, the will be as nearly fireproof as human hands can make it. Upholstered tip-up seats are to be. provided throughout. The Charlotte Street frontage will be occupied by a tea-room, four shops, and a large garage, which will occupy all the space under the theatre at the rear of the shops. The building is very handsomely designed in classic design, with a fine ornamental tower over the corner, whioh will culminate in a crown, which will be outlined in electric lights after dark. It is understood that pictures are to bo shown nightly at the new Crown Theatre, tenders for, the erection of whioh will be called in about two weeks' time. M". James Bennie is the architect.
