THE HUTT ROAD
e MEASURES FOR ITS PROTECTION. With the advance of the Autumn the risk that, wa6 being taken by leaving the Hutt Road in its unprotected state, to be cut up by the heavy traffic during the winter, was very great. _ This rißk could not be taken by the City, though the neighbouring boroughs, which perhaps benefit more directly than the City by the existence of a good road,_ were quite complaisant in regard to this important work. Rather than see. the surface of this important highway worn away completely, the City has put on a gang of men who are to do surfacerepairing and water-channel clearing work. These men have now been, a,t work some time, and the result is evident. Those patches where the big foundation-stones had - begun to show through, have been remetalled and blinded, and any threatened weakness or breakage in the surface is being attended to. By this means it is hoped that tho road between Wellington and Potone will not be allowed to become tho elough of despond it was wont to be during the winters of a decado ago. The coßt of the maintenance is to be borne by all the contributing bodies on the proportional basis adopted in the case of tho capital cost of the road.
