BRITISH WAR BUDGET
The war news to-day. discloses great activity in all -the great •theatre's, with severe fighting at all the strategical points. The British line in Flanders has been readjusted to meet the new situation created by the enemy's unexpected resort to poisonous gases in their surprise attack, arid heavy fighting is proceeding north and south-east of Ypres. Tho Germans claim successes in the Zonnebeke region. Fighting is also reported from the Champagne and Argonue - distriots, : with-results favourable to the-French. In the Eastern theatre the Russians are actively engaged along their, whole front, aud a'great battle is developing in Western Galicia!- - The Germans still insist that they have won a great victory in that region, claiming ' .enormous captures of men and guUs. The Russians, .by a clever tactical move, are reported to have almost surrounded an AustroGerman army, which was forced to retire, leaving, a .'.large number of prisoners. As noticed elsewhere the Allies are making good progress on tho Gallipoli Peninsula. The Germans, claim to havo isolated „_{, he Russian Baltic port of Libau, and to be now threatening Riga. The/Italian Parliament, assembles'next week, and thevcveiit is fraught '• ■ ';with .the highest importance.. Mr". Lloyd Georgia. has-"''outlined' his' .. . .War Budget, and pven the country some idea of tho huge cost of the great conflict, There is considerable opposition to the liquor taxation proposals.
