A TRIBUTE TO THE Y.M.C.A.
Gunner A. R. Squires, of Hawera, writing from Cairo under date March 15, pays high tribute to the work of the Y.M.C.A. amongst our troops in Egypt: "I would like t» emphasise to you," he says in a letter to his father, "the splendid value of the work done by the Y.M.C.A. Throughout the camp there is daily praise expressed by the men in recognition of their appreciation of what is being done for their comfort and \velfare, and when I mention that there are three big marquees maintained wlierein men may come and either read, .write, play games or. listen to lectures. and addresses, many of the last-named having been given by some of the;very best authorities and speakers it would be possible to produce, you will begin to know how very greatly these privileges are being availed of. I don't ltnow that the Y.M.C.A has ever stood in such wholesome regard with so many men in one place before. I have been to several of the lectures. One of them was about 'The Mosques of Cairo,' and was illustrated by a wonderful set of views. It was a beautiful thing to listen to. I have been to several of the mosques myself and the architecture of them is really wonderful. I hope soon to send you some views which I myself took by the aid of a small camera I have. Another lecture was on 'Egypt and the Capitulations,' by a Mr; Somebody, who is a lecturer to the lihediv.il School of Law, and this also I thoroughly enjoyed. So it is that, we spend our evenings when wo do not go into town."
