AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE
OF" CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE. At yesterday's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce a 'sub-committee recommended: ."That the question of the extension of British Trade be considered by a conference of Chambers of Commerce." , Mr. R. W. Waterhouse said that he thought the time had arrived when they should attempt to do something practical towards protecting British trade and penalising Germany. Some held that this should come later, but ho believed that they should strike now, with a view of getting legislation on the Statute Book during the coming session. They must not only think of themselves in this matter, but must remember the children, who would take their places in the future,
The speaker was of opinion that they should convene a, speoial conference of Chambers for the purpose of thrashing the whole matter out. Mr; C. W. Jones agreed aB to the importance of the subject, and suggested that as. there was a movement on foot to hold a conference—postponed from last year—that, such a conference should be called, and that the subject mentioned should be one for discussion. It Was suggested that the_ conference should bo held whilst Parliament was in session. The mdtion to hold a conference' was agreed to, and the secretary was instructed to write to the other Chambers throughout New Zealand suggesting that a conference be held in Wellington either in July or August.
