Gibson, Kelso, Otago< No. 12/483 PRIVATE ROBERT WATSON, 6th (Hauraki) Company, Auc& land 'infantry Battalion. Next of kin, Mr. John Watson, Tirau, Auckland. The first list of the killed included W. V. Knight, originally of AYaipara,' New Zealand. ■ All the deaths recorded from the Dardanelles are hospital cases, the result of wounds. . A cable has been received that the progress of the wounded at the Dar* danelles is generally satisfactory, except those cases reported as dangerously wounded. •
THE WOUNDED REPORTED IN PRIVATE ADVICES Wanganui, May 3. 'A private cablegram • states that Lieutenant P. K. Tumbull, solicitor, o£ Wauganui, who was a member of the Maiii Expeditionary Force for Egypt, had been wounded, and is now in Alexandria Hospital. Blenheim, May 3. A cablegram has been received stating that Lieutenant Owen Mead has been slightly) wounded in the Dardanelles. inglowood, May 3. A cable message from Alexandria this morning - 'that Rupert Nicliolls. a well-known'local man, has been wounded in the thigh.. ' ' lnvercargill, May 3. The relatives of Lieutenant G. Myers, Bth. (Southland) Regiment, have received a private cable stating that he was wounded in the foot during the' recent operations in the Dardanelles. The wound is stated to be not serious< DIED AT SEA. ' . Dunedin, May 3. ■ A wireless message has b'een received stating that Private Dan Bardsley, of the 2nd Reinforcements, who had been invalided home, died at sea oil April 29 during the voyage. Private Bardsley, whose parents reside at North-East Valley, was a single man, twenty-five years of age. _ _ Our Carterton correspondent reports that news lias been received in that' district that Major Hart, with the Main Expeditionary Force, was 'injured in the recent fighting in the Dardanelles. He is progressing favourably. . NAVAL CASUALTIES IN*THE DARDANELLES ' (Rfec. May 3, 11.30 p.m.) ' London, May 3. The naval casualties in the Dardanelles from April 25 to 30 were' 26 kiHeS and 60 wounded.
THE DELAYED NEWS STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER, Speaking to a reporter yesterday afternoon the Prime Minister -said: "You can assure the public that no news has come through with which they have not been made acquainted, and I deprecate the mischievous nimours which have bceu put in circulation. "We have asked for full information, and the moment it Comes it will be made public. In iny case we have to remember the difficulties in the way .of getting' reliable information at a long distance from the base, and,also the fact that there is a big difference in time between New Zealand and the j Dardanelles." SYSTEM OF ANNOUNCEMENTS.' > As considerable anxiety exists regarding the casualties that may have o<w curred to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force 1 in the Dardanelles, the Defence authorities have taken special steps to' have them announced w'hen&Veij advices are received. Under the system adopted . all official' casualty messages will come direct to Defence Headquarter?, Wellington, where the next-of-kin will be immediately turned Up on the Department's lists, and telegraphic advice sent on to them forthwith. After the lapse of half an hour from the time Of this dispatch of the messages to the next-of-kin the casualty lists will be furnished to the Press, and the publio advised of their' contents. The Press Association in turn will send out the lists all over Ne\v Zealand. This system will adhered to, and the public are warned liot to believe reports from; ' any other sources. •• \. ■ CONGRATULATORY MESSAGES TO SIR ALEXANDER GODLEY. The Prime Minister (the Right Eton. W. F. Massey) has beta informed %, His Excellency the Governor that he has forwarded a cable message as follows to the General Officer commanding the New Zealand troops at the Dardanelles (through the Secretary of State for the Colonies): — "New Zealand is filled with pride at what her troops have accomplished, and desires that you will oonvey to all ranks her tribute of appreciation of their gallant conduct. New Zealand, looks forward eagerly to having fuller details regarding 'the operations of her men. ■*._ . "LIVERPOOL." Dunedin, May 3. The Hon. J. Allen has sent the Mowing message to General Godley "Have .read with quickening ptilse the meagre nows of your magnificent doings. Now Zealand awaits the casualty list with fortitude ; . born of pfide that her sons have proved themselves worthy in this tiine of trial. Please say to your command, and especially to the wounded, that our hearts and thoughts are with them." N
