MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE CASES LIQUOR AT TRENTHARI Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Herbert Howes admitted a charge of taking liquor into the Trentham camp without the permission of the officor in charge. Sub-Inspector M'Kumon said that the authorities had found such an offence (is accused had committed a great nuisance at Trentham, and wanted to make it pretty clear that people could not take liquor thero in this way. Three bottles had been taken into the camp by accused. A flue of £5, with costs lis., was imposed, in dofault 14 days' gaol. As tlie result of a disturbance in Cuba Street on Saturday niglit. Gerald M'Mahon was charged with drunkenness and assaulting Constable Cunningham, and Harold Lee was charged with obstructing Constable Cunningham. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for both, and pleaded for leniency. The Magistrate said, as ho had stated before, ho meant to protect the police as their duties 'were oftentimes anything but pleasant Fines of £2, in default seven days' imprisonment, were imposed in eacn caso AN EXPENSIVE WAGER. As the outcome of a wager relative to the number of electric light globes bo could shatter, H. J. Perkins was charged with wilfully breaking ten globes in tho Thorndon railway-engine shed. He was ordered to pay the cost of the same, 12s. 6d., with 16s. witnesses' expenses, in default three days' gaol. A similar charge, preferred against J. R. Hollows, was dismissed.
OTHER CASES. Elsie Olive Wat-kins was remanded until Thursday-on a charge of importvning on Wellington Terrace. Mr. H IT. O'Leary appeared on her behalf. James M'Natty appeared on remand charged with attempted suicide. He was convicted and discharged on his agreeing to go to an institution until work is found for him. Charged with committing an aggravated assault on his wife, Frederick Blacklidge was remanded for a week us further proceedings are pending. The charges against Matthew Living stone of loitering in Willis Street for the purpose of betting, and being a bookmaker did loiter 111 Willis Street for the purpose of betting were fcirthoj remanded to May 10. John Mitchell was remanded for a week on two charges of stealing a carpenter's tools. An old man named Martin Coogan, charged with being idle and disorderly, was discharged on the condition that he went into the Ohiro Home. For drunkenness, Michael M'Mahon and Evelyn Butler were each fined 205., in default three days' gaol, Thomas M'Laughlin was fined 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment, while five first offending inebriates were dealt with. John William Carlton, who succeeded in getting drunk and arrested twice during the same day,, was convicted and discharged on the first charge and fined 10s M in default 48 hours on the second. Alice Louisa M'Ginnifcy was ordered to pay 17s. 6d. medical expenses and 12s. 6d. other expenses, on a charge of helpless drunkenness, in default three days' gaol.
MAINTENANCE CASES.
For disobeying maintenance orders, the following were, dealt with:—Annie Elizabeth Burn was sentenced to three days in gaol, warra.Tft to be suspended on payment of ss. per week; Claude Pike-was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment at Napier, warrant to be suspended if 2s. 6d. per week is paid; Leonard William Elliott was sentenced to 30 days' imprisonment, warrant to he suspended on payment of 255. per week. For Sunday trading l'anos Boolionis was fined 55., with costs 7s.
