MASTEHTON.
The football season opened on Saturday in fine weather. A match was played between Red Star and Newman (Eketahuna), the latter winning after a good game by 6 points to nil. A try was scored by Cooper and a penalty goal kicked by Henry. One bankruptcy was recorded in Masterton during April. Masterton vital statistics for the month were: Births, 20; deatlis, 5; marriages, 9. The secretary of the Wnirarnpa Egg Circle has received a communication from the Department of Agriculture stating that the export of bran has been _ prohibited,_ and that of pollard restricted. In view of the new season's wheat coming forward for milling, the Minister considers that there will he large supplies of pollard and bran available shortly, and that this will have the effect of steadying prices. It is considered, therefore, that the circumstances at present are not such as to warrant the employment of the extraordinary powers conferred upon the' Government of fixing prices. A sum of £10 per month is to be contributed to the Belgian Relief Fundi by the Castlepoint County Council, The annual meeting of the Masterton Miniature Rifle Club was held on Thursday evening, when Mr. 0. Pragnell was elected president, Mr. A V. Swanson captain, and Mr. J. A. Young secretary.
A considerable area of land in this district lias been turned over duringthe last few weeks. The greater portion of it is being put down in root crops. Nominations for officers of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society closed on Thursday. Mr. B. R. Rayner has been elected president unopposed, and Messrs. T. S. Arcus and E. M'Ewen vice-presi-dents.
The, Castlei>oint County Council intends canvassing the district for signatures to a petition in favour of establishing a daily mail service between Masterton and Castlepoint.
In the Harbour Board election for the Wairarapa last week it is worthy of note hat, while 2198 persons in the boroughs and town districts' recorded their vote, only 405 ratepayers in the counties went to the polling-booth. The annual meeting of the Gladstone branch of the Fanners' Union was held on Monday evening. Tho Wairarapa branches are appomting delegates for the provincial conference to be held at Pahiatua on May 18. Councillor P. V. Smith has resigned liis seat on the Akitio County Council. A team from the Masterton Bowling Club proceeded to Pahiatua on Saturday, and annexed the Dixon Cup- by 18 points to 14. The total rainfall registered at Solway for the month of April was 1.62 inches, as compared with 5.08 inches in April of last year.
