ITALY AND THE WAR

ADMIRATION FOR COLONIAL TROOPS. A former resident in New Zealand, now settled in Italy, writes to Mr. H. F. von Haast, on February 28 last, as follows:— 1 ■The above is our address,' and will be as permanent as circumstances 11 allow, because tho Italians aro sitting on & rail waiting to _see on which side the bids fall. If we have them as allies, the Germans may take a tour south in force and make it warm all round, unless otherwise and elsewhere too nmch occupied. But, if Italy fights with Germany on her side, then all the resident Germans will make it warm for foreign enemies, as they buy villas and construct gun emplacements, which they call foundations for observatories whoreiu to view tho stars or any sublunary object of intoreßt. A radio - station is closo to our house in a Gorman-owned villa. As a clear view of tho dirigible shed is available, ono may expect the radio news to bo sent to the nearest aeroplane hangar. Tho New Zealand contingent is attracting much notice in the Italian papers, not only because they are fine fellows, well found, but ori account of their efficiency. In fact, the colonial troops excite more attention than professional Tommies, because they are volunteers instead of trained soldiers whoso calling is to fight. The papers publish all news received and place it side by side, so that one can easily see how one account contradicts the other, and the truth merely becomes evident when one sees, where the next action is fought. I am ; sending a circular signed by tho Learned of Britain; it was translated into German as well as Italian, and wo have-' iown them broadcast through the land, and hope that the contents will filter into Germany, if not in print, at' an v.-Tate viva voce. However, the Italians are fairly' shrewd, and need little teaching, _so the circular merely confirms where it does not instruct." '
