An officer on the Leon Gambetta says a third of the crew were sleeping on the decks, the rest, except the officers, were in cabins, which were barred on the outside.. ; ' Suddenly the ship was plunged into darkness. .Admiral Senes ran out of his cabin in his nightshirt. . The fcene was indescribable. The anguish of the crew barred below desperately shouting to be released, their comrades fumbling in the darkness, not knowing where to turn first. Soon, the shouts became feeble murmurs, then as the ship filled there was the silence of death. Explorers .of the hull will find masses of corpses, tightly linked in desperate attitudes whicn will tell of the supreme death struggles. _ .. Several officers sei/zcd Admiral. Senes and forcibly lowered him into a. launch, which capsized, and all were drowned. As the last boat was making for shore long after the Leon Gambetta had sunk it passed a cadet, the last living object. It was impossible to take him aboard the crowded boat. The cadet gasped: "Never mind, lads, carry a kiss for mother."
