Maitaa tnat she had encountered rough weather on her journey across the Tasman Sea tf&B fully borne oat by the appearance of, the vessel as she made up the harbour yesterday morning. She had a heavy list to the starboard; while on berthing at tih© Queen's WhaTf further evidence of the handiwork of the rough gale the vessel encountered were visible. Altogether—considering the severity of the wather—tho vessel escapcd very well, aad with, the exception of the depletion of some of her deck fittings, wee not dam- , aged at oil. Hough weather was experienced right on from the time tho Maitai cleared Sydney Headi. > The con<iitions became worse as the vessel proceeded, and shortly she wa« in the centre of a severe southerly gale. The vessel was tossed about and struok by huge eeae, and had to be hove to—once for 18 hours— pwing to the terrific gale. She laboured in these conditions for five days, -and on Thursday, when the weather moderated, she was able to make better progress, arriving here eventually nearly two days behind time. The local office of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company haa received advice to the effect that tho Delphic, which arrived •at Homo on April 5, did not commence to discharge until April 26, owing to the congestion existing at the docks. The same congestion has been the cau6e of considerable delay in discharging and loading operations on many vessels treding to New Zeaiand.

'AdVices from Newcastle (reports tho Sydney "Shipping List") states that during the first three weeks of April there has been only one vessel to leave the port for Chili, and the cargo of coal she tooic reached 2300 tons. . , . . For the' corresponding 1 period oi nast year there were several shipments, ana the. total quantity exported was 50,580 tons. . The exports to Java and the Philippine Islands over the same three weeks totalled 3889 tone and. ml, as against 34,000 tone and 16,000 tons respectively for last year. These furnish a striking illustration of the effects of tho year ana the afternoon shift strike.. The foreign traao has been dwindling away, and this week it reached only 10,068 tons. The interstate and New Zealand trade is, however, continuing well under tne adverse circumstances. . This week it totalled 49,470 tons. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP.
