NOTES ON THE RACING

I>rnn> Onr Sn«eW(hw'pr,flil»ntl The scratching-pen was freely used in the Hack Hurdles, Hurak'ia, Rigo Park, and Maryland being withdrawn. Birkful was a very warm order, but he jumped his out of the saddle at the first fence/ where St. Fire also toppled over.

At the next fence Okaliu fell, and the third brought down Vascular and Braeburn, and Fagot now held a big lead from Golden Water and Euffiano, and it ivas not reduced on the journey. There was considerable speculation after the race as to what caust.il the falls. Soveral blamed the new brand of hurdles, but other trainers assortod it was want of proper schooling. This is probably so, as owing to the uneven state of the schooling courso very-little jumping was ' been done on it. Maltegarde was the favourite in the Maiden, with the English colt Heather Mixture, Fapauira, and Mo6sman. backed in that order. , Tho start was delayed by Lady Ua, Hygia, and Astrologer, but eventually the barrier went up, when this trio and Heather Mixturo were not near it. Papauira showed out from Pearl Form and Mossman to the turn, where the favourite drew Tip on the outside, and after a good finish with Mossman he won by a neck. St. Omer, who oaiso from a long way back, was third; then came Pearl Form, -Papauira, and Toki. Nursery Handicap Three was a one-pound better favourite than Eangitero, while Eligible and Bonny Dream were also well supported. The Welkin colt, who has improved a lot in condition sinca he raced at Trentham, was quickest to begin, and he was not headed on the journey. Rangitero ran up to him at the turn, but the colt went on again. Bonny Dream also became prominent, but nothing lad a chance with Three. Eligible got a very bad Dribble, Spain, and Sicily were the next to finish. Croesus saddled up well for thePorangahau Handicap, for which he was sent out a warm favourite. He had to be hard ridden to hold his position on the fenoe over the first two furlongs, but after that the race was never in doubt, and' though Dinner Gong, who got a bad run, was within a head, of him at the finish, .the favourite won easily. Tete-a-tete was prominent the whole way, but the last bit beat her out of second money. Centre was fourth, after running on tho outside the whole way. Downham ran badly, and Belasco could not go the pace in the first part, though he was running on the finish. Balboa and Chortle both _ stripped very fit horses in the Cup, while Sauoi was without the trappings on his hind legs that have distinguished his recent efforts. The race . was run at a crawl for the first six furlongs, and this ivas right into Chortle's hands. At the start Bon Keve led Balboa and Sauci, the whole field being under 2. strong pull. The first five furlongs-took lmin. 7sec., and positions then were Bon Reve,' Indigo, Balboa, Sauci, and Chortle. Hounding the' bottom bend the favourite was just~behind the leaders in a packed field, but in the straight lie got shut in, and before O'Shea could extricate him Chortle had passed him and won. the race. The chestnut colt was two lengths away, and thon came Multiply and Sauci, with the others closely bunched. The win was very popular, but the favourite was badly handled, and was unlucky to lose. On the other hand Emerson, rider of Chortle, handled his mount -with consummate skill. He saved hira for one short run, at whioh he was seen to great- advantage at the end of a slow-run race. . Prior to the Karamu Hurdles the stewards met to consider whether the same stylo of fence should be used, and after some discussion it was decided to continue on with the new obstacles. 'Vi was made a good favourite. Bollin, who looks very big, made the early running for-Vi; at the home turn he was in difficulties, and the favourite took Oharge, but Sensitive headed her. In the run to the last fence the latter went for a gap and run iVi off, but 6he continued on ana just beat Master Timi, who had kept on the rails. The stewards decided to award the race to Master Timi, but the placing of a. second horse was held over. Vi changed .hands for 200 guineas just before the race, and carried Mr. L. Furr's colours.

The money being tied up, speculation was limited in the ■ Poukawa Handicap, for which Multiplication was favourite, with Black Heart next in demand. Prom ft good dispatch Marimba was quickest to' begin, and she led Sea Lord, Black Heart, Multiplication, and Conziska to the turn. At the; straight entrance the favourite got carried inside and spoiled his chance. Half way down the running Cervnlus got up on tie fence, and after a close finish won bv a neck from Marimba. Conziska was close up, then came Multiplication, Black Heart, and A Ices. : There were numerous scratchings for the last event. George finished up a good favourite, but he caught the tapes in his mouth, and after being tangled up with them ,he eventually got clear; but his chance itas spoilt. Kaminohe was in charge at the distance, but Allen Doone finished fast on the outside, and just beat the Kararau representative. Diavolo was third, and then came Gold' Fran. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.
