Paris, April 28. Official. —The French armoured cruiser Leon Gambetta, 12,351 tons, . was torpedoed in the Adriatic on the nightof April 26 . The bulk of the crew were saved.' The Leon Gambetta was cruising in the Straits ■of Otranto, and the Austrian submarine No. 5 fired two torpedoes at night time. The warship sank in ten minutes. The officers perished at their posts. Italian ships rescued 133 of the crew. Forty-eight bodies have been recovered. Most-of the sunivors were injured. Romoj April 28. The Austrians torpedoed the Leon Gambetta off Santa Maria di Leuca, a cape on the east side of the Gulf of Taranto She was beached to prevent her sinking. (Rec. April 29, 11.30 p.m.) Rome, April 29. The survivors state that during the attack on the Leon Gambetta a German destroyer protected the submarine, which came from Cattaro. Tho destroyer also fired on the French cruiser. ■ HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT The High Commissioner reports:— London, April 28, 10.15 p.m. "Tho Admiralty reports that the 1 armoured cruiser Leon Gambetta was torpedoed by an Austrian submarine between 'Monday night and Tuesday morning in the Adriatic. "All the officers perished. Out of 710 of a crew,-138 were rescued." The French armoured cruiser Leon Gambetta, coaipleted in 1904, was of 12,351 tons displacement. • Her heavy armament included four 7.6-inch and sixteen 6.4-inch guns. TORPEDOED BY SUBMARINE PIRATES FATE OF A GRIMSBY TRAWLER. London, April 28. The Germans wen, anxious to warn vessels not to approach the German coast, evidently fearing that thej might hide the approach of the British—("Times" and Sjduey "Sun" Services.)
