Overshadowing everything in the war news to-day is the brief ' message which .the Seoretary of State for the Colonies has telegraphed ' to His Excellency the Governor with regard to "splendid gallantry arid magnificent achievements" of the' New Zealanders in the land operations ill the Dardanelles. There is practically nothing, so far, to sup- • -'plenient tho Governor's message, and details of the fighting should be ' awaited with patience and' fortitude: Turning to tho Western theatre we are told by Sir John French that the German attack on the Yser has been definitely stopped. The enemy's, losses have been appalling, and for some of the new units of the' British Army, this stupendous battle was their, baptism of fire. There are further accounts of the Canadians' great exploit—"it was Canada's'battle}" and their motto is "Never Beaten!" The enemy has scored a point in'tho Champagne district, but the Allies, in a counter-attack, have recovered half tho \ lost ground of about In the Eastern-theatre the Germans are manifesting intense activity in Northern Poland, and this news probably heralds another period of heavy fighting on the East Prussian front.
