After carrying 011 a large dry goods business in Napier, with considerable success, 110 acquired an interest in the local evening paper, the "Daily Telegraph," and eventually became its solo proprietor. A few years ago he. sold the paper to a company. Mr. Knowles took a keen interest in all movements for the advancement. of Napier and surrounding districts, lie was at various tinies a member of local bodies,' and was chairman of the Napier Gas Company and oilier joint stock concerns. Miss Nina O'Flynn, who was brought out from England by the Government, and lias for some time past been acting as sub-matron at the Sunnyside Asylum, left Wellington for Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday, to connect wfui the Omrah for London. Miss O'Flynn intends to go straight to the front, as a nurse, and has already been cabled for and has had a station allotted her.

The Rev. W. Slade (the new superintendent minister) and the Rev. J. Richards were welcomed on Wednesday night by the Wellington, South Methodist Churches. The Rev. J. Dawson, president of the conference, presided, and in the name of the Methodist Churoh of New Zealand welcomed.the ministers and their wives and Mr. Slade's fam-. ily. Mr. C. M. Luke also spoke, as did the Revs. W. A. Evans and_ W. Shirer. Solos were sung by Misses Chapel, Cuminings, and Croucher, Messrs. Musker and Patrick, and recitations wero given by Messrs. Basil Cooper and Edgar Fclthain. Miss Ena Ward played the accompaniments.
