Cable advice has been received in Wellington stating that the Now Zealand Shipping Company's Kuapehu, bound from St. John, left Sydney tor Auckland on Tuesday, and is due here about May 12. The steel twin-screw geared turbine steamer Cumberland, built by Messrs, Wm. Hamilton and Co., Ltd., Glasgow, for the Federal Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., London, was launched last month. The vessel, which has a cruiser 6tern, is to be engaged in the New Zealand meat carrying trade. Her .principal dimensions are:— Lengh, 496 ft.; breadth, 60ft.; depth, 39ft. 6in.; with a d.w. carrying oapocity of 10,400 tons. Built to Lloyd s highest class, she is of the shelter deck type, with bridge deck, deckhouses aft, promenade deck, and t.'g. forecastle. Accommodation, including, smoke room, has been provided on the bridge deck for passengers. The holds and 'tween decks are insulated, and a large refrigerating plant has been installed. 6he is lighted throughout with electricity, and wireless telegraphy has also been _ provided. The machinery consists of twin-screw geared turbines, capable of driving tho vessel at a speed of 14 knots on service. Tho christening ceremony was performed by Mrs. Heiderson, New Zealand. It is believed that the Norwegian barque Phyllis (Captain Gabrielscn). which left Pernambuco in June last for Buubury. West Australia, to load a cargo of jarrah for New Zealand, has foundered with all hands, as no news has been received of the vessel since she sailed. Some four months after the Phyllis had left for Bunbury the charterers had to make other arrangements for the cargo to be taken on to New Zealand, and another vessel was fixed and the cargo delivered months ago. The Phyllis, which was an iron barque of 932 tons register, was built at Bristol 27 yoars ago, and was well known in the Australian trade.
