NEW ZEALAND'S LOYALTY
'A SOUTH AFRICAN, TRIBUTE. Approval of the actions of the New Zealand Government ill upholding the traditions of loyalty for which tho Dominion has always boon well known is expressed in a letter received by the Prime Minister from a correspondent in Protoria (Mr. H. 'I'. H. Knight). Emclosed in the letter isßeuter's telegram containing the substance of a speech made by tho Prime Minister, in which ho said that although the war expenditure of the Government was £300,000 a mouth, he doubted whether New Zealand was doing enough, and that New Zealand would do more if, the Imperial Government would suggest in what way we could do more.
Following is an extract from tho letter: "Many New Zealanders here have noticed the remarks you made as per the enclosed cutting. They are highly delighted, and they have asked me, as the oldest New Zealander here, to write to thank you for upholding in such a manner the. known intense loyalty of New Zealand. I have the more pleasure in doing so, for I know from a long experience (even before the rebellion time) that the feeling is not of a spasmodic character, but strong and alive in anything oonnected with the dear Motherland. It is devoutly to bo wished that you and your colleagues will retain your positions to help to pull her through this trying time. It is an awful and ghastly war. Thousands of willing men will still be wanted. Allow tee again to thank you on behalf of myself and colonists for maintaining the high moral character of New Zealand."
