ALLIES ASSUME THE ~ OFFENSIVE GERMAN REINFORCEMENTS EXHAUSTED A DEADLY ENCOUNTER CANADIANS' FIGHT IN THE ILL - TREATMENT OF BRITISH PRISONERS LORD KITCHENER SPEAKS OUT The,seoond phase of the great;battle in Flanders discloses the idlies on the offensive; lost positions have been regained, thousands of fresh troops hare been brought into the firing line, the German reinforcements'are said to hare been exhausted, ,and the enemy has been manoeuvred into a position -which' compels him to fight on two fronts. In the Dardanelles, the French have occupied Fort Kum Kaleh, which guards the western entrance on the Asiatic side, while the expeditionary troops which were disembarked for. the land operations have gained a strong footing, preparatory to an advance. Turkey internally is in the throfes of disaffection, and the Minister for War has just experienced an unpleasant reminder of. the perils of. statecraft in times of national stress. There is practically no news from the Eastern 1 theatre, nor are there recorded any fresh developments in the Austro-Italian crisis.' The German pirate' submarines have inexplicably ceased their depredations, and the whole of the ■ naval situation is wrapped ixC mystery. The treatment of British prisoners of war in Germany has been discussed in the British Parliament, and in both Houses tie Germans have been severely criticised 'for what Mr. Asquith described as their, "calculated cruelty." Lord Kitchener, in the Upper House, delivered a crushing indictment of <' German methods in connection with the treatment of prisoners.
