ST. MARY'S GUILD.
( ANNUAL REPORT.
Tho annual report of St. Mary's Guild, to be presented! at the meeting this afternoon, states, inter alio, that in the main home the accommodation during the year had been fully taxed. .The hoalth of the girls had been good on the whole, though several inmates had to be sent to the hospital, whoro they received every care and attention. It was found that the girls' class' room was quite too small to accommodate all the'girls and matrons, and as £30 was kindly given by a friend for the purpose of enlarging it, the work was carried' out successfully. The annual sale ot work by the matrons and girls was held in November, and was the most successful they have ever had. During the year nine girls have been admitted, nine have left, and three placed in servjce. Four Home girls and one service girl were prepared; by the Rev. G. Y. Woodward, cuaplain to the home, and confirmed at St. Mary's Church, Karori. The. cottage home had been quite full all the year. More effective fire escapes wore put round the cottage home, and several other necessary repairs effected. The guild desired tothank Dr. A.. Bennett for her great attention to the health of .the* girls, also Mr. Hursthouse for his long continued care of the teeth of the girls of the main home. Dr. -Murray Litchfield and Mr. L. Levien are kindlly doing the same for the ohildren of the cottage home. Thanks were due to Miss Heath,\ the lady who has classes for physical culture in Wellington, for kindly volunteering to hold a class weekly at St. Mary's Home, which! the girls greatly enjoy. The cnildren wero not taken to tho seaside this Christmas as a suitable house could not be procured, but they were taken for picnics and excursions to the country, the for. which were again provided by M(ss'Marjorie Hayes and her friends of mrori.- The guild was much indebted to the Government for the annual grant of £200; also to tho Macarthy Trust for £100, and. to the Diocesan. . Social Service Fund, for v their contribution of £55. With; the above and the help of many subscribers, expenses for the. year,- including repairs aid replacements,' have been met, and in addition £150 of the remaining' debt on the cottage home has been paid off. The Government grant for the present year last December made the balance larger than it would otherwise have been. ' Tho guild" expressed their appreciation of the untiring devotion: of the matrons to the welfare of the; girls. During the year Miss Underbill, matron, of the cottage home, left, and has been' -replaced .by Miss Pannifer, who" has'been.in training at the main home for several years.
