GERMAN TROOPS MASSING IN GALICIA Petrograd, April 26. The transfer of German troops to the Cracow region and the Carpathians is daily assuming larger proportions. The troops' include newly-trained Bavarian and Landsturm formations. The' Germans are denuding the Narew region (in Northern Poland), of all the units that can be spared, and with these they are plugging the dangerous holes in the Carpathians, replacing them with' heavy artillery. DESPERATE BATTLE IN PROGRESS. Petrograd, 'April 27. Official.—"A desperate battle in the direction of Stryi continues." . THE GOLGOTHA OF THE CARPATHIANS SCENE OF SANGUINARY FIGHTING. ' ' ' , (Rec. April 27, 9.35 p.m.) . . , London, April 27. The "Daily Chronicle's' 1 correspondent at Lemberg writes: "Amid the snow-crowned peaks in the heart of the Carpathians is Hill 992, 30 miles south of Stryj, dominating the river, with a railroad and highroad running through the winding gorge. Hill 992 has been the scene of the liercest mountain fighting in the war, and has earned the titie of Golgotha. The Germans alone have'lost 20,000 sinee the Austro-Germans attempted to dislodge the Russians. _ "The Austro-Germans captured Hill 992 on April 9, but the Russians still hold the village cf Koziova, and the gateway to She plains is firmly and securely held. The Russians could retake Hill 992, but it is not worth the cost of a frontal attack, in view of the Russians' general position in the district." ■ , AUSTRIANS CLAIM FURTHER SUCCESSES. ' - (Rec. April 27, 9.35 p.m.) London, April 26. An offioial message from Vienna claims that the Austro-Germans have oaptured a, height south-east of Koziowa, taking 1000 prisoners, "The enemy repeatedly counter-attacked at Koziowa and adjoining districts, but all attacks wero repulsed with heavy losses, two battalions being annihilated, several further hundreds being taken prisoners. We occupied many of the Russian trenches. "The Russians before Uszok then retreated in full flight."
