EDUCATION BOARD
•.MONTHLY MEETING. <v Tie monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held yesterday. Thore were present: The Hon. J. 6. W- Aitken (chairman)/ and Messrs. A. W. Hogg, T. Moss, C. M. Luke, W. Allan, F. Freeman; J. Kebbell, and Sir Walter Buchanan. The statement ,of .finances showed that thore was a debit balance of £1269 to buildings .account, £1506 to manual and technical account.- (This, of course, means;that these moneys aro due to the board.) The total debit balance was £2567.
Correspondence was received from the department, authorising a house allowance in lieu of .a residence at Tauherinikau. It was pointed out that ,an allowance might be useless, as in Tauherinikiu, as in other country districts,' it mipht be difficult for a teacher to get a house. ' Indeed, itwas most unlikely that .a suitable house would bo,' available. The chairman pointed out that the reason for the granting of an allowance was to'get over an immediate difficulty. If no allowance had been granted the teacher would havo received nothing, and would still havo had no house. On the motion of ■ Sir Walter Buchanan it was decided to protest to the Government against the con. tinuance of the practice of granting allowances in lieu of houses in certain country districts. Grants of £260 for. a three-roomed residence at Carrington; and of £6fiQ for additions to the Maranui School were, acknowledged. 'I Authority was received from the Government for the erection of a caretaker's dottage at Kelburn Training Collego. • The chairman explained tnat the infant school, in conjunction with tho Training College, had been twice broken into, so that a caretaker on the premises was necessary. It was decided to grant an extension of the Junior National Scholarship to Frank Marshall, as soon as formalities were complied/with. A request was received on behalf of tho Wellington workers for Dr. .Barnado's Homes that they should be allowed to enter schools for ths purpose of addressing the children.—The chairman said that, while all sympathised with tho work of Dr. Barnado's Homes, he did not think it would bo wise to give agents access to the schools in school liours. Perhaps the lady who had charge of this work could arrange with head teachers as to the hours when she could speak to th'e children. This view .-the board endorsed., It was decided that the West Coast members should visit Johnsonville School, in response to the committee's request for an inspection by board members. The following resignations were accepted:—Mr. K. Ross (Clyde Quay), Miss N. Hogg (Masterton), Winn E. Wissner (Koputaroa).
