TERRIFIC ATTACK BY THE GERMANS
The full fury of the tremendous battle which' has raged about the Ysqr'Canal, north of Ypres, during the past week is now revealed'to the public. A terrific German offensive was planned with the object of breaking through the Yser line and on to the westward, but the capture of Hill 60 by the British compelled the enemy .to show his hand. The attack was launched, and was preceded by the ghastliest and most ghoulish innovation in the history of Military tactics a veritable fog of death in'the shape of a cloud of chlorine gas, liberated from, the German trenches, and wafted to t)ie Allies' lines -by a favourable wind. An initial advantage in the offensive was thus gained which carried the enemy iacross the Yser, only to be driven back after an interval of most desperate fighting. The most coiispiouous incident of the battle was the gallant exploit of the Canadians, who, caught between two fires, had to fight for their lives, and fought to such purpose that the whole of the Allies' line along that portion of the front was eventually re-established. The Germans, by the way, are, celebrating a great victory. 'From the Russian theatre there is only a formal announcement of progress made at various points, with an . Austrian communique claiming exactly the opposite.: The attack on the Dardanelles is; in progress, but there are np developments. In German SouthWest Africa the Union forces have occupied a position which has made possible the establishing of important communications for the southern Union forces. .The German submarine pirates are busy, and reports still continue to arrive concerning the movements of the North. Sea fleets.
