A NATIONAL HIGHWAY
TAUMARUNUI PROPOSAL. The Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce has had under consideration the question of the carrying through of a great central highway from Auckland to Wellington something on the lines of that being built in America, between' New York and San Francisco. To enable through traffic to be carried on it is proposed to utilise existing roads, linking them up, bridging the streams lying along the route—principally between Taumarunui and Taihape—-and building the missing stretch of road between Taumarunui and Te Kiiiti.
The Chamber believes that if this 400mile road oould be put into first-class order, metalled at least, and possibly with a concrete bed iu parts, it would give an impetus to trade between town and country that is hardly realisable. Motor traffic would rapidly develop, and the cost of living, which presses hardly on residents in the remote interior, would ' ha substantially reduced, because prosperity would come wherever easy locomotion was possible.
The Chamber has instructed its secretary to write to every Chamber of Commerce and public body along tho line of route to secure their co-opera-tion in making a strong, united appeal to the Government by placing before it. the urgent necessity for such a vital arterial road.
