EDUCATION INSTITUTE

REMITS FOR ANNUAL MEETING.

A meeting of tho Wellington District I lnstituto N of the Now Zealand Eduoa-1 fcional Institute was held last night 'in the Education Board offices. Mr. J. B. Hopkirk presided, and tho attendance was large. The following nomination of members for the executivo of the Now Zealand Educational Institute was made:—President. Jlr. H. G. Cousans, M.A.. Auckland; vice-president, Mr. A. Erskine, Wellington; secretary, Mr. H. A. Parkinson, M.A., ; treasurer, Mr. E. U. Just, Lyttelton; non-official members (one vacancy),' Mr. A. N. Burns. Mr. A. M'Kenzie moved: "That this institute make representation to the Education Board regarding tho appointment_ of teachers." The mover said that it had been hoped that the days of lists being submitted was ended, but apparently that was not the case. He felt the board should make the appointmentp. Mr. H. A. Parkinson said that school committees would prefer that the board should make the appointment, and not submit three names to them. He felt that the motion was very indefinite. Mr. Foster protested against the institute having to consider such ail important matter at a moment's notice.

Mr. M'lieimo was given leave to withdraw the motion, and consider drafting it in a more definite form, at some future date.

The. meeting proceeded to consider remits for the annual meeting, the'first being one by Miss Myers, relating to the anomaly that with a rising schpol a teacher- might find herself in" the awkward position of having to accept a lower salary. Tho Temit was agreed to.

"That pending a system of payment based on efficiency and service, all efficient assistant teachers .in Grades :1 and .2, of ten or more years' experience, be given salaries ranging from £150 to £180, according to merit," was a remit put forward by Miss Coad, who . said that she realised that a Bystem of payment based ou efficiency could not take place all at once.

Mr. A. N. Burns and Mr. H. A. Parkinson thought that the time was not opportune to make any. suggestions regarding salaries. Mr. Parkinson thought that to make such a suggestion before they were accustomed to their increased cheques granted this year would do the profession more harm with the public than any good they might get out of the proposal. Miss Coad suggested that it had been said that this was a very, good time to ask, on account of- the uncertain state of the political parties.

It was decided not to forward the remit on.

It was decided not to send on the following remit by Mr; W. T. Grundy: "That the" time lias come when the subscription for membership should be 4, made uniform throughout the institute.' 1 Mr. N.'A. Foden, a young teacher, moved"That the deduction of 5 per oent. from the salaries of teachers who have passed certificate examinations, and who-hold a license to teach, but who are under age, is inequitable." It was agreed, without opposition, to forward the remit.

Further remits included one-. by Mr. W. W. Rowntree: "That it is highly desirable that house allowance to nead teachers be discontinued, and .that. an amount equal to the house allowance prescribed by regulations be added to the salary of all head teachers, and that where residences. are already in existence, the teachers in occupation pay rent." It was decided to forward the remit.

Other remits wero l)eld over for future consideration.
