Several thousand women led the rioters to the Governor's palace, shrieking: "We want bread! Give us back onr husbands and sons!" When the Governor threatened to call out the troops, the mob ran amok, breaking the windows of tho Austrian shops and wrecked the fashionable Palace a ] ar g e steamer about to leave with eight hundred tons of food for the Cattaro garrison. Tho crew escaped.
