BTJTTBR V. CHEESE QUESTION DEBATED. (By Telegraph—Special Oorresjondcnt.) Pahiafua, April 22. The extraordinary general meeting of shareholders in the Ballanco Co-opera-tive Dairy Company, held to-day, was largely attended. ' The meeting lastod several hours. A motion by a former chairman and present director, Mr. A. M'Farlane, who recently returned from a. visit to the Old Country: "That the company undertake'the.instalment of a dual plant for tho manufacture of cheese as well as butter," was defeated by a large majority. It was resolved that the advisability of selling any of tho company's skimming stations be left in the hands of tho directors. The butter and cheese question was debated at considerable length, and the meeting at times was ' very lively. Certain. suppliers stated that they propose seceding and forming a separate • cheeso; company.. The Ballance Company received advice to-day that the shipment of butter by the Somerset realised 1405.' per cwt., and' the Mamari and Athenic shipments' 131s. per cwt. The Pahiatua branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union decided at a. meeting this week to forward the following remits for consideration at the Provincial .Conference to .be held in Pahiatua next month:—(l) That agricultural lime be- placed on a similar footing to manures as regards free analysis; (2) that the compulsory clause in the Noxious Weeds Act, referring to the cutting of Californian thistle,'.be deleted; (3) that in the interests of and for the protection qf farmers, the sale and exchange of farming properties should be •undertaken - by tho union through the agency and co-operation of each local branch.—Pahiatua' correspondent. . Although ,in the'-midst of a large bufter-man-ufacturirig district, householders in Pahiatua have row to pay Is. 6d. per lb. for factory butter. The Ballance Dairy Company has been receiving very good prices for its late outputs of butter, as high as up to Is. 4d per lb. having been realised.
