STEAMER SPACE
« GLAMOUR FROM SOUTH. While Canterbury is clamouring for more steamer space to allow fat stock to be taken off the drought-parched pastures, the demand for space has by no means ceased in the North Island. The impression seems to prevail in the south that in the North Island the season has ended. ' This is not the case. If all the stores were cleared to enable all works to run at full capacity, the available supply of stock would very soon be dealt with, but no such thing can possibly happen. All that can happen is that works may run intermittently or at very much below full capacity. In the meantime farmers holding stock are anxious to get it safely into the cold stores. It is not correct to say that there is no demand for freezing space in the North Island, and therefore no need to clear the stores. There is still a very insistent demand for freezing space in Auckland and Masterton, and also at Wanganui and Patea. It has been estimated that the North Island cold stores will not be cleared before noxt season begins.
