NOTES OF THE RACING.
(By Telegraph—Speoial Correspondent.)
Palmerston North, April 22. ■ A ,, new ',f o rt,of record was established '? the hairanga Hurdles,' when, tho mpier-trained Birkful scored and paid the smallest dividend known in a jumping event. He jumped beautifully, and was in front practically throughout the journey. The time was very fast, but the form is discounted considerably by the fact that The Diver was close up. Oyra was prominent for a mile when The Diver supplanted him and led over the last fence, but on Deerey giving the favourite a reminder he went on and won easily. - Aruake was a fair third, and then came Sandy Paul and Cornelian. Monologue and Waipunoa were scratched. who has been Tacing badly- for a long time, had a winning turn in the otonyhurst Welter. Over tho first part Ladogeur, Zetcs, Lady- Daylesford, and Crawford were prominent, with Multiply and \\ ant in the rear. Entering the straight Zetes was in charge, but Zeus finished fast on the outside, and "won nicely, Ararat got a bad run round the bend and did well to finish third. Montana failed badly, and Multiply seemed to be hampered by the weight. Patronale and Monologue were withdrawn. Marimba was a better favourite than lysoti in the Cloverlea Hack Handicap, for which all tho acceptors went to the post. Tyson gave a little bother at the barrier, but got out well and led Martlet and Zion into the straight, when the last-named forged ahead and won by a length. Martlet was a close third Then came Tirana and Marimba; the latter did not begin well, and was one of the tail division after three furion<»q had been covered.
A smart shower fell just -before tho nine acceptors in the Eleventh Manawatu Stakes faced tlie starter. Desert Gold was a very hot order, and the Greenwood bracket was better preferred than the CluVkcljorc bracket. The favourite was unlucky at Ihe barrier, and Gold Foil and Bimeter lxith led her down the back, while Emporailm- brought up tho rear. Across Iho bottom the favourite war a unci; in aivwiM gf Gold
meter, with Rangitero coming fast at the distance. Emperador was up with the favourite, and had settled Rangitero. In the run homo he accounted for Desert Gold, and won by a neck. Rangitero was close up, and then came Flying Start. The last-named again failed, and has probably had enough racing for the season. Though defeated, the All- Black filly easily retained her title as the best two-year-old of the year. The Hack Welter was regarded as very open, and the first six horses on the card were all well backed. Hereford finished up favourite, and after a great finish with Sylrandale he won by a head. The latter jumped out smartly, and led down the back and into tho straight with a two lengths' lead, but the favourite, hard ridden, stuck to his task well and got in front on the post. A rank outsider in Collector was third, and Janitor was fourth. Improve and Sir Fisher ran badly.
Merry Roe, Pavlova, and Orleans were withdrawn from the Longburn Handicap, leaving a dozen runners. Sauci was a good favourite, and several of the others were evenly backed. Ventura, did not get out too well, and. Tete-a-tete led from Sunbird and Square Deal down the back. Ratana joined the leaders, and he, Sunbird, and Tete-a-tete led into the straight from Bertrada and Kilrain, with Sauci coming fast. In the run home Sunbird got the advantage, and won by a length from Bertrada, with Kilrain a similar distance away, followed by Sauci and Ratana. Ventura got a very bad run, and so did Birkline. Sauci's effort was distinctly pleasing. Fortify was withdrawn from the Hack Flying, leaving five runners. This was the smallest field of the meeting. King Chiara was a slightly better favourite than Botanist, but the latter led throughand after a good set-to in the straight, with the top weight, he lasted long enough to win by a head. Danger Signal was a poor third. King Chiara, who had contested the previous event, was withdrawn from the Borough Handicap, ten facing the starter. Just after leading the bird-cage Avon Park whipped round and unseated her rider, but she was soon caught and remounted. Chakwana was the machine favourite, with Avon Park, Astor, and Castalia backed in that order. From a good start Chakwana, Astor, and Grattan led down the back from Avon Park; Grattan was done with entering the straight, but the other pair finished on well,' and the favourite won by a length. Avon Park was two lengths away, followed by Orleans and Bonny Rigg.
