FRISCO MAIL ROUTE

PROPOSAL TO CUT DOWN THE TIME. Sydney, April 22. Mr. Fi&hor (Federal Prime Minister), writing to Mr. Holman (State Premier) in reference to the suggestion hy Mr. Nielsen (Commissioner for New South Wales .in America) regarding a fnster American mail service, says that the Post Office is already paying a much higher ■ subsidy for the oversea mails than the circumstances of the 'Postal Department justify. Moreover, with cheaper week-end deferred cables, he considered that there was no warrant for increasing the cost in order to secure a shortening of time in transit. He also doubted if the vessels ensuring quicker transit would be suitable for trade purposes.

Mr. Nielsen recently placed a nroposarfor improvement .of the Ran Francisco'rtnil service before the Government. It was nroposed to reduce the journey to Sydney by four days. t r i stated that one company had offered to build two twentv-knot vessels for the service; When the Federal Cabinet received the proposal, the Postmaster-General snid that the Suez Canal route was ouicW and cheaner. and be is satisfied with the international poundage rates and arrangements of the Pacific service.
