The Minister of Defence stated yesterday that he would be going to Dunedin at the end of next week to attend a National Reserve meeting, a recruiting meeting, and a Navy League meeting. Dr. A. Marques, Consul for France at Honolulu-, lias written to the Premier of New South Wales, intimating that ho has been appointed to act also as Consul for. Belgium. Dr. Marques state# that the Belgian Government is purging its list of consuls who are of German birth. Ho points out that tho following countrie are represented by Germany in Honolulu; Austria-Hun-gary, Mexico, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Until recently Germany also represented Russia.

The funeral took place yesterday of .Mr. John Chambers Moginie, a very old ! resident of Wellington, who died at bis residence in Hankey Street op Tuesday. Tile late Mr. Moginie arrived in Wei-' lington when the seat of Government was removed from i Auckland in 1865. The late gentleman was born in Little Haddon, Hertfordshire, England, in 1841, aiid came to New Zealand, arriving at Auckland, in 1&6'2. He joined the Provincial Service ill Auckland, and in iSSU was transferred to the Public Trust Office as accountant. He held that position until his retirement 20 years ago. He was extremely popular with all with whom he came into contact. He leaves a widow, two sons (John Chambers, of Messrs. W. Cable aid Co., and Arthur Harold, of Svdiiov), one married daughter (Mrs. D. \Y. Anderson, Wellington), and two unmarried daughters.
