SUPPLYING LIQUOR TO A TROOPER
SUBSTANTIAL FINE IMPOSED. John Conway Murphy, a groom at the Remount Camp, Upper Hutt, waa yestorday charged at the Upper Hutt Court with supplying liquor to a member of the Defence l'orces, when in uniform, for consumption elsewhere than on licensed promises. Action was taken ■undor the now War Regulations, the case being the first of its kind in the district. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was represented by Mr. R. H. Webb. Constable M'Holm stated that there had been a great deal of drinking about tho Hutt during the encampments at Trentham, and the authorities .were desirous of putting down this sort of thing. Defendant had been given 2s. fid. to procure the liquor, and had thus made Is. Ctl. on the transaction. Tor tho defence Mr. Webb pleaded ignoraneo of the regulations. The Magistrate, Mr. G. Cruickshartk, said that the '. oty fact of defendant procuring the liquor for the trooper plainly suggested that Ji.; knew he was doing something wong. A fine of £3 was imposed, in default ten days' imprisonment.
