The Minister of Railways (the Hon. W. H. Herries) is visiting tho South Island and making an inspection of the railways there. He will probably go as fa r south as Dunedin. The Minister of Public Health (the Hon. R. H. Rhodes) left by tho Kaitoa: yesterday afternoon for Nelson, on hospital business. Whilo in Nelson he will take the opportunity of inspecting the military camp at Tapawera, where part of the 10th Regiment is spending its annual term under canvas. Mr. Rhodes expects to be back in Wellington on Saturday.

Mr. H. H. Ostler, the present chairman of the Victoria College Council, who is leaving shortly to reside in Auckland, attended the council for the final time last night. At the conclusion of the meeting tho following motion, put by the Hon. A. L. Herdman, was carried by acclamation: —

"That this council expresses its regret that circumstances compel Mr. Ostler to sever his connection with this council, and places on record its high appreciation of the services which he has rendered to the institution, both in his capacity as a member of the council and as-chairman."

Bannatyno and Co., has purchased an interest in the Office Appliance Company, Ltd. and will act as co-director with Air. H. A. Fox, who still retains his interest in the company. Air. Sydney Dix returned to' Wellington yesterday morning, after an extended holiday amongst the southern Cold Lakes. He has quite recovered from the nervous breakdown from which he has been suffering for some months past.

Air. F. H. Pope, manager of the Auckland branch of the State Fire Office, is at present visiting Wellington. Air. W. S. Catheart. superintendent for the Australasian Temperance and General Mutual Life Assurance Society at Wanganui and Napier districts, has returned from Sydney.

. The latest news of De Wet is that he is suffering from a serious internal complaint* and is to undergo ah operation, writes a former Wellington resident in a letter received from Johannesburg. Tho Guerrilla warrior had for some weeks been under medical treatment, and when the. letter was posted from the Transvaal city, De Wet was believed to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown. His eldest daughter had been operated upon for cancer, but the patient was not expected to survive.

The death is announced of Mr. D. Cameron, of Moroa, Greytown, one of the earliest settlers in the Wairarapa. Tho late Air.' Cameron, who was 82 years of ago, came to New Zealand in 1841 with his parents. The family landed at Kaiwarra, and in 1846 his father entered into possession of the Pahaua property, subsequently divided among tho family. Air. Cameron is survived by a widow, six daughters, and two sons.

Two members,of.the Wellington Harbour Board are at present laid aside by sickness. Mr. J. Trevor has not been well enough to attend the board meetings for some time, and influenza has temporarily accounted for Mr. jf. Cohen, of Palmerston North. Both wero granted leave of absence from last night's meeting of the board, and the hope was expressed that they would soon be quite restored to health.

The Rev. W. A. Evans's term as a member of the Victoria College Council expires. on June 30. At next meeting of tho council he will be reappointed as from June 30.

Tho Finance Committee of the Victoria College Council reported last night that Mr. C. P. Powles, having retired from the offico of registrar, Air. C. Watson and the acting-registrar had been authorised to draw up and send a suitable letter. The nppointinont of tho acting-registrar (Air. E. T. Norn's) as registrar, was confirmed.
