BROOKLYN KINDERGARTEN MEETING

THE QUESTION OF FINANCE. A meeting of parents and of citizens interested in tho work of the Free Kindergarten Union was held in tho Ea|> tist Church Schoolroom on Monday, for the purpose of forming a local committee to deal with various matters in connection with the financing of the Brooklyn Kindergarten. Owing to tho short notice tho meeting was not largely attended. Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., presided.

In tho coiirso of his opening speech, Mr. Wright pointed out the fact that kindergarten wark in New Zealand had not reached the status that it had ill tho United States of America, where it was part and parcel of the national, svstom of education. It was through 1 play in tho kindergartens that the seeds of knowledge were gradually instilled into the little minds of tho children. Those wlio were working in these kindergartens deserved sympathy, consideration, and support from the general public, and ho was sure that if it realised what was really being done the kindergartens would bo heartily sun-: ported, and that in time to come tne syst-ern would be a recognised part of education in this country, conducted by the State on national lines, just as the State schools aro now conducted. Mrs. Gill, president of the Kindergarten Council, explained that it was now thought desirablo to form a committee in each of the districts in which a kindergarten was existent, which would, make itself responsible for collecting money which would be paid into the General funds for tho upkeep of the kindergartens. These committees would make their 'own arrangements for the collection of money, which would be regularly done at stated times. • Miss England thought that perhaps ,'°. Municipal Council might come to their aid with a grant, •as she understood they made one to the Technical College.

Mrs. Gill said that the. Macarthy Trustees had granted the council £TCO during the past two years, and she hoped that it' might bo possible to get the amount increased. . Mr. Wright thought that as educational purposes was one of the objects to which tbo MacartHy Trust was devoted, they might get help in that direction, but in any case they did not want to lose sight of tho fact that they must help themselves first. The question of the local committee and its work rested upon organisation, and they must collect regularly. Every trifle helped.

Miss Riley also spoke of the work which was done for the children in the schools, where they spent at least' two happy hours every day, and in return the parents could surely do something at.least once a month to help t<j keep them going. ,Mr. Wright proposed that a local committee be formed in connection with the kindergarten, to devise ways and means of assisting the work financially and otherwise. Tho resolution was carried, and' tho following committee, with power to add to its numbers, was set upMesdames Bailey, Hunt, Harris, Tasker, Messrs. R. A. Wright,_ M.P., Gressier, Jackson, Frost, Smith, Wilkinson, and Dr. Robertson. '
