RELIEF FOR THE WOUNDED

WELLINGTON RUGBY UNION MOVES. At a recent meeting of the committee of the Rugby Union a movement was set on foot to promote a. carnival to provide funds for a suggested fund for the relief of our men who may be wounded at tie front or who may leave dependents requiring assistance. A meeting was held on Friday, comprised of representatives of the union and of the N.Z. Natives' Association. Mr. H. Buddie was in the chair, and explained that the meeting- was held to consider a suggestion that the union and the Natives' combine in holding the suggested carnival, the date of which had been fixed for May 1. It was decided that those present form themselves into a committee to further the object. The programme suggested was that the principal attraction should be a representative Rugby match between a team selected from the Trentham camp and a Wellington representative team. The camp officer® had met the union by agreeing to allow the team the necessary leave, and out of the large number of representative players in camp a team almost equal to a New Zealand team would be available to represent the Expeditionary Forces. As a preliminary to the representative match, it was decided to put on a costume burlesque preceded by a procession in costume through the town. Several other possible attractions were discussed and left with sub-committees to report when next the committee meets. It was decided to continue the carnival in the evening in the shape of a sports entertainment at the Town Hall, for which various events were mentioned, and at the next meeting a novel and attractive programme is to be announced.

The committee in charge consists of Messrs. H. Buddie, C. 11'Intyro, and G. Gapes (representing the Natives' Association), and Messrs. D. D. Weir, A. Griffiths, and G. T.uoni (representing the union). Messrs. C. M'lntyre and W. G. Talbot am acting as joint-sccretarics.
