Women's Protest Re the Troops. The Wellington District W.C.T.U desires to endorse tJio strong protesl made by the Dominion W.C.'i'.'l/. Convention recently held i;i Christchurch, against tlie decision to send no more chaplains with future Reinforcements, Poor ef Creat Britain and Belgium Relief. Mrs. Rolleston and Miss Bell have received parcels at 47 Molesworth Street from: Mrs. Allan, Mrs. Wardell, Miss 15. Kinvig, Mrs. Jowett, Mrs. Wilberfo&s, Mrs. Marchbanks, Mrs. J. H I'owles, Miss Carter, Mrs. Whittem Miss V. Martin, "Anonymous" three parcels. For the Comfort of tho Troops. During the past fortnight members of the local committee of the Countess of Liverpool Fund, under the Mayoress, Mrs. J. P. Luke, hare been working et high pressure in their efforts to provide the Reinforcements and the men at the Front with comforts and necessities _in the way of socks, balaclavas, mufflers, mittens, etc. In all, the committee has sent away 11 cases of speci-ally-addressed parcels, 3504 in number, for the artillery and any other branch of the service in which it was possible to localise the men, and three caseG for general distribution. Also packed •away in the cases wherever there were corners to fill were 16 dozen cholera belts and 12 dozen mufflers for general distribution too. The Dunedin committee, through the Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke, sent 5001b. of cake, and with the Wellington committee's contributions, the amount sent from the throe centres, Dunedin, Christ-church, and Wellington, totalled 12001b. of cake and CO cases of apples. Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool, from the GenFund, sent four gramaphones and u6 double records to ' tho Reinforcements,'and a large supply of magazines «ud periodicals were also supplied. Out .of the call which was made for 400 balaclavas a little while ago for the Reinforcements, Christchurch sent Uo, and the various towns in the Wellington military areas also answered the appeal very generously, so that the required number was soon supplied. On JJiursday 26 dozen balaclavas were sent to the men at Trentham, but' as 2000 men have to be provided for in each Supplementary Force that leaves the Dominion supplies are constantly needed, so that it is hardly advisable to Blacken work in connection with the supply of comforts for those who are paving to go to the war. The Weilington committee lina 550 extra men as well to provide by June 1 with socks, mufflers, balaclavas, etc., in answer to Her Excellency's appeal, so that there is still much to do. The Christchurch committee has worked very hard indeed in conjunction with the Wellington coni- . mittee, and has nevor failed to respond to any appeal that may have beeu made by tho latter committee for whatever goods may have been urgently required.. For the future each . centre in connection with the Countess of Liverpool Fund will provide a quarter of whatever may be needed' for the full number bf men at the froni.' For the men who have been laid aside with measles in the Berhampore Hospital, the Mayoress has collected periodicals, books, andmagazines from-Mrs W. F. Massev, Mr. Cording, and Mr Norman Aitken. Tlie Mayor haß colfected newspapers and tobacco and the Citizen Soldiers Dinner Fund is sending cases of apples and supplies of cako to the Hospital. The men on board the Philomel have a very great longing for, a harmonium, according to statements that have reached the Mayoress, and she would ho very grateful to anyone who would care to satisfy this desire and would acquaint her with the fact that thev are prepared to do so. The Philomel men were fortunate in possessing among their number on board n musician who can play the harmonium, but of what use —Unless they have one.
. Mrs. Alexander and the Misses Alexander (Dimedin) and Mr. and Mjs. W Alexander are staying at Oaulfield House. Owing to the many other calls that made upon her time, Mrs. Algar Williams has decided to.withdraw as a candidate for election upon the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Her decision will be received with regret, as there is a wide field for public work tor women in Wellington, and Mrs. .Williams has already proved her capacity in connection with the Plunket Society. Mrs. and Miss Powell, who have lived many years in the Marlborough district, have decided to live in the North Island, and are at present spending a tew weeks in -Wellington.
The annual meeting of the Thorndon Methodist Ladies' Guild was held on ihursday afternoon in the Molesworth street Schoolroom. There was a good attendance of members. The guild has given valuable assistance in many branches of the work of the Church and a letter was read from the circuit stewards thanking the Iftdies- for their help in the recent successful effort to extinguish the dobt 611 the Thorndon circuit. Officers were appointed for the ensuing year, and some new members joined. A musical programmo (arranged -by Mrs. G. S. Cook),and afternoon tea provided by Mrs. Jamieson, brought a very pleasant meeting to a close.
