A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that the Governor and Vice-Regal party left for Eotorua yesterday, where they expect to spend about ten days. ; The Hon. J. Allen left yesterday morning for.Hawke's Bay, wliere there are one or two education matters requiring liis attention. He will leave Hastings this afternoon to connect nith the Main Trunk train at Palmerston, arriving here to-morrow morning. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. J. Cullon, lias gone to Auckland on Departmental business. Last evening the Victoria College District Court of Convocation expressed congratulations to Mr. H. H. Ostler on his election as a Fellow of the University of New Zealand. Mr. _ Ostler is the first graduate of Victoria College to be elected to the University Senate. ' Mr. T.' Kirk, head of the orchard branch of the Department of Agriculture, 'has intimated his intention of attending iho conference to be called by the Horowhenua Fruit-growers' Association to devise means for dealing with .the small-bird pest.
Miss Dorothea Spinney, wlio was to have begum a sorios of recitals at the Masonic Hall this evening, met with an unfortunate accident last evening, which, though not serious in itself, will compel the postponement of the recitals for a week. It is notified elsewhere that the tickets sold 'will be available for the rfcitals at the • later dates, while those desiring it may have their money returned.
Mr. W. T. AVeller was admitted to the office of deacon at St. Paul's ProCathedral on Sunday by the Anglican Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott). He has been appointed to the Ohakime district.
Mr. i\ Venning, of the District Lands and Survey Office, iv]io lias been promoted to the position of Receiver of Land Revenue at Gisbornc, was last week presented by his fellow-officers with a pair of binoculars. Mr. C. Folden, who has been transferred from' the Lands Office to-the Audit Department, was presented with a sot' of carvers, silver cake dish, and bread fork.
Mr I\ \V. England, of the firm of W. and C!. Turubull and Co., Wellington, who has joined the Reinforcements at Trentham, has been presented with a wrist watch by his fellow employees. Mr. J. Macintosh made the presentation. ■. ■
Mr M M'Enroe, who has been a member of St. Mary' of the Aiigcls' choir for. many years past; was the recipient of a presentation from the members of the choir last Sunday on the occasion of his approaching marriage. In making the presentation, which- took the form of a handsome . silver rose bowl, the Very Rev. Father O'Connell referred eulogistically to Mr. M'Enroo's work in the choir, and to his fine personal qualities. Mr. 13. J. Healy, condactor of the choir, spoke in similar strain. Mr. M'Enroo suitably responded.
Mr. J. "A". M'Ewnn was yesterday re-elected unopposed for the Mayoralty of Petonp. .Alt'. M'Ewnn enters upon his ninth term of office as Mayor of l'etoiie.
Dr. A. J.. Cowie and Dr. IL>len Ccwie, of Masterton, are ■ leaving in the course of a' few days for England, where they intend offering their services to the Imperial authorities. They expect to bo away for about twelve months.
